I certainly fell into this category. The very thought of my next spanking scared me and really was at the top of list of things to avoid at all costs.

The promise of a spanking was foremost in my mind until it happened. Of course, more than once I attempted to be SOOOO Good that it was cancelled.

I don't recall ever having a spanking officially called off but I did always try to earn such a cancellation. A certain way to NOT obtain a cancellation was to remind your parent of the promise and then to inquire whether your good behavior had been good enough to excuse you. THAT never worked!

The psychologists claim that there are three crucial elements to using punishment: promptness, severity, and certainty.

Clearly households that keep the current spanking implements on display and thus ready to hand enable all three elements. Having a special hook for the cane, strap, or spoon enables all three elements: the implement is ready to hand and thus the spanking can be prompt; lengthy and strong implements like the spoon and the cane rarely break and neither will a for-spanking-only strap. Each can be used firmly and as severely as the offense requires. Finally, parents' resisting the desperate pleas not to be spanked ensures the third element, namely the certainty.

Gisela grew up with all three and to my mother's credit, so did I. Not my favorite thing knowing that the spanking yardstick was handy but its length and availability fulfilled the elements of effective punishment.
