I am now a secretary at the elementary school in our town the paddles are smaller and they have two sizes a 14 inch long one for k through 2nd grade and a 18 inch long paddle grades 3rd through 5 th I do witness paddlings the little kids get the smaller paddle and do not get hit as hard . They explain to the first time usually k or first graders that . The principal and APs all paddled me on elementary school always professional

I think it is good that they have smaller paddles for the younger students. From my experience, thethickness of the paddle makes the most difference and I have made a few. I use 1/2 thick oak project boards for the paddles I have made. I think that thickness makes for a lot of sting without being thuddy. I have only used them on consenting adults and have taken a few sample swats myself, just to know what it is like.
