 I grew up in Idaho and Montana in the 60s and 70s. School paddling was very common in the schools I attended. In high school, 6 to 8 swats was customary. After a trip to the principal's office, we went back to class with hot, sore bottoms, and red, teary eyes.

Then, at the end of the day, we had to go home with a note from the principal...

3 licks must have been the most they were allowed to give us in my Texas school district. I never knew of anyone getting more than 3 swats at one time through my 12 years of public school. But usually, 3 were plenty.
