Thanks so much, Brenda, for your account of what is so different about the razor sharpening strop. I briefly had access to one and I realized that spanking with it was kind of an awkward use.
The one I had control of and all the others I have seen at barber shops are designed to be stretched tight against the anchor and then provide a finishing final touch on the edge of a straight razor. The anchor point is critical for the intended razor sharpening use since rubbing the razor over the leather requires that the leather be stretched quite taught. If there is slack in the strop, it is not going to sharpen the steel fibers in the edge of the straight razor blade,
What this means is that when the strop is removed for use in spanking a bottom, it is a new use for it. Getting it to deliver spanks is a bit awkward. Neither natural end works well. The anchor end is a metal clamp that hooks onto a ring on the barber's chair. The other end is usually a soft leather pseudo handle. Often these are removed if the strop will never again be used for sharpening. So, a dual use strop will have to keep its handles. The plot can thicken further if there are two layers but I will ignore that complexity.
So, the would be spanking use requires an awkward grip and then a swing. But swinging a strop is complicated also since it is very flexible leather. This forces choking up. So, I suspect the main value of the razor strop for spanking was the fear and reputation of it. However, Brenda confirms that once one has been spanked with it, one never forgets how it "stays with you." And, shows up as sore reminders the next day!
