Question for Beth, did the threat really include all those adjectives? Others, how many modifiers did your parents commonly put in front of the dreaded S-word?
Here’s a possible list: good, sound, old-fashioned, hairbrush, over the knee, bare bottom, of your life, so you can’t sit down for a week. Any others?
Final question for those willing. I knew someone who said to her daughter, “would you like to go to the corner?†This meant a spanking without mentioning it. Were there similar threats whose meaning was clear, like the old one, “a trip to the woodshed�
