I was in a very dark spot mentally and threatened to hurt myself after a vicious argument with my mother. She was at her wits' end, I suppose, and had my father hold me down while she spanked me with a belt. I didn't repeat the threat, so I suppose it technically worked. I resented the things she said to me more than the spanking. Most of the spankings in our family were given before age ten. I don't think my siblings were ever spanked as teenagers, either. But, she spanked me because I said it mostly to hurt her, which I didn't make clear in my comment. The spanking I got at age four for drawing on the walls hurt me more, emotionally, than that one.
