The most common position I was spanked in was over the knee. This was one of the most embarrassing positions because it was so childish. My mother always had us more over her lap so she could smack our butts with a more downward motion of her hand or brush and gave her better access to our sit spots and thighs. Also it allowed us to kick more, which she thought was a measurement of the spanking and also added to our embarrassment. Over the end of the couch was the favorite position use by my father with his belt. He had a clear shot of my butt, sit spots and thighs and the skin was tighter on my backside which made things hurt more. My uncle had us lay flat on the bed for the belt. While the belt hurt, it did not hurt as much as being propped up on pillows which made your butt cheeks tighter. All fours on the bed was used by my aunt with the belt or big paddle. The paddle hurt worse than the belt and after a few swats my head was pressed into the bed crying and screaming. That made my butt a better target and tight and hurt much, much more. The absolute worse was the diaper position. This was used by one of my aunts, particularly if she was spanking me and my mother was present to hold my legs up (and sometimes apart). Not only was this super embarrassing, seeing the paddle being swung towards my butt made it worse and since my butt was very tight, it hurt beyond all belief. Also I was afraid it was going to hit things outside of my butt cheeks. At school it was bent over a small table or desk. The coach that spanked us had a swing that hit your sit spot and kinda lifted you upwards. That really hurt but you knew it was going to be worse when you got home. What about you? At school, bent over in some way — hands flat on desk, touching toes, or similar. I don't think one position hurt any more than another, but OTK was most embarrassing. Other compact implements only require a short arc of sharp downward force, and where even a relatively weaker person has enough strength to set fire to a bare backside. I guess that might make the brush stick to the skin for a moment longer. More contact, more sting. I wonder if the oil might also hold in more heat on the surface of the buttocks. Another thing to consider is that hairbrush spanking (or with other similar very hard and compact implements) really does not require much arm strength or length of arm travel because it depends on the length and relentlessness of the punishment. If the spanker is patient and focuses on the same spots, administering the weight of the brush with a snap of the wrist motion over-and-over again with no break, those spots become increasingly sensitive as the fire builds. However long it takes, it will reach a point where even a tougher miscreant will be thrashing around in desperation and yelling their head off. By the end of the spanking, anything even touching those raw spots is agonizing. This is why it doesn't take a physically strong person to be an effective disciplinarian, and why being turned over the knee can be so much more than just embarrassing.
