So you would reason with your child, explaining why they should not do what they did, and next time the situation presents itself, your child acts with compassion and wanting to do what's right, rather than simply because they fear possible punishment, and thus when they some day become an independent adult, and no one is there to cause them fear, they simply are good for the sake of being good.

It's not as colorful a tale as a spanking, but it might just work.

That's a world of difference from adults who grew up with spankings, and have taken those experiences as a model for some form of adult discipline. Your perspective is refreshing here.
