The relaxation she feels is real but it is also fake. Let's say that "stress" is a 1-10 scale, 10 being the most stressful, and day in day out we are normally a "5." Right after Amy smokes she is a "5." But then nicotine starts to leave the bloodstream, and her body is now wired to "need" nicotine. Pretty soon she is a "6," and then a "7." You and I (and other non smokers) are still a "5." That day she went without at her parents house she probably got to a "10."

When she smokes she then goes from a "7" (or whatever) back to a 5 and feels normal again, hence the illusion of receiving stress. But the cigarette CAUSED the stress (not having one). Does that make sense?

Man that had to be one long car ride for everybody. BTW, the reason she chain smokes is that real stress (getting it from her mother) causes nicotine to leave the body faster (so does drinking) and hence you need to smoke more often to feel normal again
