Subject: (SFFR) The Stepmother (SStoryman) - A Review

Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

The Stepmother - A Review

Part One - The Author

SStoryman was one of the major Smoking Fetishist writers in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They wrote 43 (known) stories between 1996 and 2006. In addition they also helped at least one other writer, AZ-Man thanked SStoryman for help with the stories 'House of Cards', 'The Elusive California Dream' & 'Pygmalion'. Similarly, SStoryman thanked AZ-Man and another writer Stogie-Man (StogieMon?) for their help with several stories published between 1999 and 2001.(1)

Thematically their output covered both start and re-start smoking stories, in some cases they reworked ideas first explored by other authors (2001s 'Just Practicing' is response to 'The Play's The Thing' by An4, 'Losing It' published in 2002 and 2005s 'Ellie' are both based on stories by author An02, specifically 1998s 'Weighty Problems' and 1995s 'Miss Vicki'.), other stories involve fantastic elements, for example,'Back and Forth' published in 2002, dealt with travel to an alternate universe where smoking is the norm and anti-smokers are a dying minority, while 2004's 'More than Watching' involves aliens discovering the joys of smoking and sex.

Many of the stories feature quite graphic sex acts, up to and including incest which makes its appearance in 2005's aptly titled 'A Terrible Mistake', the authors penultimate story.

Part Two - The Stepmother

The story was first published on Lorings website in 2002, it was subsequently republished in the 24th volume of the Noble Leaf Library and the 5th volume of the 'SStoryman Anthology'. It covers the cat and mouse game between Melissa Robertson and Katie Robertson, her stepmother after Melissa returns from college having made some changes in her life.

Part Three - Comments

Unusually for this author, the protagonist actually started smoking before the story begins with the implied motivation being to show that she approves of someone else as her stepmother.(3) That someone being Consuela, the families Hispanic housekeeper. The relationship between the two women is conveyed well in the opening chapter.

After what this reviewer considers a good start, the author throws it away with graphic lesbian sex scenes between stepmother and stepdaughter.(5) Ultimately Melissa's father is used in the 'God From The Machine' role(6) to bring about what seems to be a happy ending. The author subverts this in the final paragraphs, where despite her protestations, it's clear that the protagonist has absorbed some bad lessons from her stepmother thus raising the question of who ultimately won the game.

This is yet another story where I think something more interesting could have been got out of the setup, but the author took the easy way out. Not recommended.

Part Four - Episodes/Chapters

1. Home Again - Sort of

2. The Party

3. Revenge is Sweet - For Melissa

4. Revenge is Sweet - For Katie

5. Getting Rid of Consuela

6. Mommy in Control

7. Dad Comes Home

8. Epilogue: Changed Forever

Notes:

1. 'Turkish Delight' (1999): "Thanks to AZ-Man and Stogie-Man for their support, ideas and encouragement.", 'Revenge' (2000): " Thanks to AZ-Man and Stogie-Man for their help and encouragement.", 'Cross-Cultural Experience' (2000): "Thanks to AZ-Man and Stogie-Man for their support, ideas and encouragement.", 'I Want You Back' (2001): " Thanks to AZ-Man for his ongoing ideas, support and encouragement", 'Conflict of Interest' (2002): "Finally, thanks to AZ-man for his editorial suggestions, support and encouragement."
2. In 2004s 'More than Watching' a character proclaims that "...profanity greatly increases my sexual desire..."
3. In 'Nic at Night' a mother is depicted as drugging her daughter so she can breathe cigarette smoke into her mouth unawares. In 'Trina's Tale', a non-smoker is tricked into starting smoking and as the story progresses other non-smokers are blackmailed, tortured or otherwise forced into starting. The use of trickery to get people to start smoking is also a plot element in 'Just Practicing' and 'Tasting the Consequences'.
4. This implied motivation for taking up smoking can also be seen in the authors earlier story 'How Could She Say No?' where it's the reason that the character Megan takes up the habit. This story can be found in the 1st volume of the 'SStoryman Anthology' as well as in 'New Smoke City: Approval' a collection of stories that make use of this same idea. A review of 'How Could She Say No?' appears in the 22nd volume of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
5. This is NOT incest, the two characters are biologically unrelated.
6. Also known as 'Deus Ex Machinia' it refers to the idea of a character suddenly arriving and resolving a situation by authorial fiat.
