Cathy's Club - A Review

Part One - The Author

'An02'(1) is one of the earliest known Smoking Fetish fiction authors online with their first stories appearing in 1995.(2) Unlike a number of other writers it is known that they continued to write after the last 'An02' story appeared in 2004 under another identity.

Part Two - Cathy's Club

For Cathy, the new job was an important step, one needed to cover the costs of her growing family. It would bring both new challenges and something that would change her life forever.

Part Three - Comments

The story is a classic example of the type of story I've come to term 'surrounded', that is to say a non-smoker joins up with a group of smokers and eventually starts smoking themselves. This is a plotline that SStoryman used in two of their stories, 2003's 'Surrounded'(3) and 1997's 'Converted' (4). More recently, Linzi Dixon's short story 'Friend's With Benefits' uses a similar plotline.(5)

'Cathy's Club' is closer in tone to 'Converted' than 'Surrounded'. While social pressure is applied, there's none of the malice that characterised SStoryman's later story in An02's story. Even the revelation part way through the story that the pre-existing members of the club had made bets on how long it would take for the protagonist to start does not change this feel, but the protagonists brief angry outburst at the moment of discovery is entirely believable.

Other plot elements from the time can be seen, Cathy's husband turns out to have the smoking fetish and the protagonists plans to keep control of her habit fall by the wayside. The stories ending is a passing of the guard moment with the protagonist discussing with her now retiring superior how they are going to help the new non-smoking hire fit in.

It's a solid story and worth reading. Recommended.

1. This is the author's preferred 'Nym' for these stories, on Lorings website most of the stories were listed under 'Anonauthor02', there was also an unrelated 'An2' who wrote 'The Gold Lighter' and 'The Pool Party'.
2. Other stories in the genre could have circulated in print prior to the Internet, but such emphera is impossible to find.
