Written Of Smoke 3: Day of the Dangle (Daniel Gary Leon) - A Review

Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

Part One: The Author

The author was active on Amazon between 2015 and 2018 and released four anthologies in the 'Written of Smoke' series during that time. Unlike Linzi Dixon or Kaitlyn Bringhurst no attempt was made to provide an author bio. The writing of the stories I've read is competent and stylistically they would have fitted in well with the kinds of authors who submitted to Loring while they were active. It's clear from common elements(1) that appear across the stories I've read so far that the author, whoever they actually were, was not a 'Loring Era' author publishing on Amazon under a new name.

Part Two: Written Of Smoke 3: Day of the Dangle

This collection, the third of four released by the author, features three stories focussed on the art of hands free dangling.

Part Three: Comments

The volume under review differs from the previous two in that the first story is probably the best of the set and the second story is written in the first person rather than the third person which the author had used up to this point.

It's clear that the first story in this set was probably written around the same time that the story 'Backwards: Kelly and Monica' the third story in 'Written Of Smoke 2: Single Mothers'(2). The backstory of the character Chelsea is a reworking of the divorce story that provided the backdrop for the earlier story. The story itself is an effective 'smoker comes of age story' with some nice character interaction, and a raunchy climax as the protagonist Karen puts the moves on the man who becomes her husband by stories end.

The second story, as noted is in the first person, the narrator starts by saying that all names given are pseudonyms and name checks the author as a 'friend'. It's just too neat a story to be anything other than pure fiction. As to the plot, it's essentially 'smoking fetishist (who smokes), looks for and finds the perfect smoking woman' and is in this reviewers opinion, nothing special.

The third story is the subject of what amounts to 'bait and switch', the blurb(3) implies a more conflict ridden storyline than what takes place. The storyline actually used is one that feels like the author took the easy way out.

What goes wrong can best be explained by comparison with the first story in the volume under review. The focal character in that story is Karen, her essential honesty as a person is established in the initial flashback scene. When she is allowed to smoke, her mother lays out rules on how Karen is to approach the habit. This sets up a conflict between Karen's evolving habit and that essential honesty. Similarly the first time that Karen experiences an orgasm while trying to perfect her hand's free dangle it's presented as something that so concerns her that she seeks out her best friend Chelsea to discuss it(4)(5), an event that sets up the stories end game.

By contrast, Dawn the focal character of the third story takes to smoking like a duck to water and the reader is treated to what seems like an endless string of orgasm's before a conclusion in which Dawn's husband announces that he plans to break with the family tradition described in the blurb(3) by having his daughter start smoking at an age younger than 14. There's no real conflict and as stated earlier it feels like the author took the easy way out.

In conclusion it feels like the author may have peaked with the story(6) that concluded the previous volume and the one that opened this volume. The collection is recommended only for the first story.

Part Four: Chapters/Episodes

1. Do As I Say: Alicia and Karen
2. S'mores: Gwen and Annie
3. Tradition: April and Dawn

Notes

1. The common plot elements I've noted are: (a). Unplanned Teenage Pregnancies. (b). Divorce situations. (c).The effects of inhaling the smoke from the tip of a cigarette. (d). Geeks smoking. (e). Smoking helping with academic prowess and coming into prominence in the currently reviewed volume but featured in all previous stories (f). Females experiencing orgasms while they smoke.
2. This anthology, the second by the author can be found on Amazon. A review will appear in the forthcoming 29th volume of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series.
3. "...gives the backward story of April Browne and her daughters Summer and Dawn. It begins with Dawn's fourteenth birthday: a day when, by tradition, the ladies of the family begin smoking. It isn't about whether or not Dawn will follow the tradition but whether or not she will be able to."
4. Karen's smoking friends are Chelsea, Mona & Stephanie. The latter two are implied to have an interesting smoking backstory when first mentioned, but it's not developed beyond the initial hints and both characters are written out of the story part way through.
5. The overall shape of the discussion in question reminded me of a scene that opens Chapter 10 'In The Meantime' of Az-Man's 'The Elusive California Dream', which can be found in the Noble Leaf Libraries 'Anthology of AZ-Man'. It makes me wonder if the author of this story had read the earlier tale. Similarly later in the story when Karen acts as smoking mentor to her younger sister Jenny, Jenny's remarks about getting addicted before telling her mother she's started inhaling may have been inspired by a similar moment in SStoryman's 'Turkish Delight' which can be found in the 3rd volume of the Noble Leaf Libraries 'SStoryman Anthology'. Reviews for the two earlier stories mentioned in this footnote can be found in the 15th & 24th volumes of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series.
6. 'Backwards: Kelly and Monica'
