Honestly, I appreciate that you went where you did, I think a lot of people are hesitant to test the water on certain topics, a lot of SFF is fairly straightforward stuff, variations on a theme. And when people do go to other places, they usually go too far, overindulging, and adding way too much unnecessary detail, especially when it comes to sex, and sexuality. If a character is straight or gay or green and bleeping, that's fine, it's been established, so move on, but when an author keeps hammering certain points, it can put people off, and detracts from the story being told. Dark-side authors are guilty of this quite often, but other authors do it as well, their stories hit gutter-level and don't bounce back.

I admit that I didn't read all of the Val stories, not my cup of tea, but from what I did, you kept it reasonable.

Looking forward to reading the new smoke weaver stuff, the superhero genre is fertile ground. Looking like another stand-alone volume is going to happen, I just need to get my new machine set up.

That aside, how's the tooth going? Kind of been where you are, few years ago, had this massive blister form above one of my teeth, and for over a month I had to eat very carefully, because if that thing burst, I would have been in a lot of pain. Turns out I had an abscess on one of my nerves and ended up having several root canal surgeries to fix it, that was no fun, and not cheap, I got lucky, being on a pension, a couple of hundred, compared to a few thousand, just I had to put up with long waits between surgeries. Got to know my dentist pretty well, though it was hard to make conversations with a mouth full of clips, files and pointy stuff. Had final destination flashbacks when he left the room.

Re: the keyboard issue, first thing I advise anyone considering a new Laptop to do, is invest in an external keyboard and mouse, extending the life of your device and increasing it's potential resale value. Plus if you go second-hand, say from a thrift store, replacements are cheap and plentiful, and often more durable than what's built in. USB is best for long writing stints, Bluetooth rechargeables for portability, depending on your use case. Also, if you're near to a recycling centre, check that out. I'd help if I could, but I'm likely on the opposite side of the planet from you, and it'd be a bit of a walk. If I could fly, I'd get my neighbour's mum to knit me some superhero duds and I'd be right there. Make me a cuppa, and we're golden.

Nick
