Subject: Off-topic - Fascinating myth/mystery/secret of the Battle of Midway

You know how launching scout plane #4 from the Japanese cruiser Tone was, unfortunately for the Japanese, delayed at least half an hour up to a full hour due to trouble with its catapult? And that ended up being the first scout to sight enemy (the U.S.) ships? And so it's believed that had it been launched on time rather than 1/2 to 1 hour late, that it would have reported sighting the USS Yorktown roughly that much earlier, very critically unfortunate timing for the Japanese?

Well, it seems to me that if it were launched on time, it wouldn't necessarily have reported sighting the Yorktown significantly earlier, and possibly may have not sighted the enemy U.S. ships at all! In fact, it being so late was what enabled its flight path to intersect with the Yorktown's trajectory! And then I found this very interesting page on the 'Net, which apparently corroborates my thought(s) -

So what many have believed to been terribly bad luck for the Japanese actually turned out to be the opposite - very good luck!

Of course, the truncated or abbreviated course that the scout plane took must have been due to it being so late, and it would pretty much need to be recovered as roughly the same time as the other 6 scout planes that had been launched at the right time (roughly 4:30 AM). And the course being shortened is what enabled them to sight the USS Yorktown at the time it did (approx. 7:40 AM).

Very interesting. They were all operating in the blind so a lot of luck involved, good and bad
