I'm new here and really appreciate the advice from those of you with more experience. Up to now, I've stuck with hand spanking my 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter. The best reason I can give is that it seemed to work as well as ever, even with my son. I would say that this is due to the embarrassment of being spanked bare bottom over my knee, more than any actual sting.

Just recently though, I've had my doubts and have considered changing my method. Some of the posts here and conversations with a mom friend made me think about whether it was time for a hairbrush. With that already on my mind, I had a very bad time with my son, starting immediately after school on Friday and continuing right up to a battle over bedtime. This last conflict led to a tantrum on his part that I would have expected from a five year old.

Unfortunately, I don't own a hairbrush that is even close to being suitable for discipline. So as a substitute, I used a wooden spatula to warm his bare behind. I'm sure it provided a little more sting and just using a spanking tool seemed to send a stronger message. Maybe a sturdy hairbrush would be better, but for now I think I'll stick with what I have. Its presence on the kitchen counter makes a nice reminder too
