Oh yes, they always know ahead of time. They never know just how long or hard it will be, but they know that it will be worse 'than normal'.

I've sometimes just said outright. "Oh, you are going to get a REALLY sound spanking, young man/lady!" But at the very least, it comes up in our pre-spanking talk (lecture). When I want it to be clear to them exactly why Mommy/Grandma is spanking, it of course comes up how serious their behavior was and that their spanking is most certainly going to reflect that.

My son never played football. But he did enjoy and play baseball. When he was younger, at least. Although if he earned himself a good spanking, he was never in any kind of rush to play baseball or do any kind of activities with his friends due to his sore bottom. Also, just for the fact he didn't want them to know that he just got spanked.
