Jack's shorts weren't as short as that, but he did look cute. Those knee socks never stayed up for very long though.

I was looking through my photo album from those days recently. One thing that struck me was just how well Jack looked: sun-tanned, bright eyed and bushy tailed.

When I worried about Jack and my parenting of him, my father used to say: "You're obviously doing something right - just look at him". I know what he means now.

So I did try to get him to wear long trousers in winter sometimes, but he never wanted to and it didn't seem worth having a row about it. If he ever came home cold and wet I would make sure he had a hot bath.

And yes, those grubby knees did lead to spankings. I can still remember that lecture: "I don't mind how dirty you get, as long as you get clean again afterwards, but I won't be ignored like this." Then I would take his pyjama bottoms down and give his bare bottom a good walloping with the back of the hairbrush.
