My two (1B, 1G) were spanked where and when the misbehavior took place. Sibling or other friends/family were not required to see it but if they happened to be in the same room they did.

Mine were pretty close in age as are my grandkids and the embarrassment level varies depending on age, situation, number of witnesses etc.

When they are young if it is just family I'd say embarrassment isn't that big a deal as it is happening frequently enough to both so it becomes routine.

The embarrassing ones are when friends or extended family are around, or if they haven't had one for a long time such as an older teen spanking who maybe thought their days of spankings were over. I know from experiences both as the spankee and spanker that when teens get it in front of much younger cousins or friends the embarrassment factor increases for sure.

For some reason when extended family gets together there is almost always a spanking and often multiple ones. I think when there are a lot of kids together they think that the parents are too distracted to catch them getting up to mischief. Some of it too is kids trying to show off to the other kids. When that goes too far they end up showing off very red bottoms.

Others mentioned seeing a spanking as a deterrent. I would agree particularly when it is older ones getting it in front of younger. If it is the younger ones getting it for something really juvenile in front of elder ones I'd say not as much of a deterrent but even them it gives them something to think about.
