Hi Jan,

Mama said it best-every child is different, with different sized and shaped bottoms. Some boys with smallish, softer bottoms may not require implements. Only you can judge if a hand spanking is sufficient punishment for your son when he has been naughty.
Does he cry real tears as opposed to "crocodile tears"? Does he do an animated spanking dance afterward, jumping up and down and rubbing his burning cheeks?

If the answer to the above questions is "no", you might want to consider switching to an implement like a hairbrush, paddle or wooden spoon.
