No, "Jack Whiteley" was humorous, a sign that I was only pretending to be cross. So if he came in panting two minutes after his curfew, and heard "What time do you call this, Jack Whiteley?", he knew he wasn't in trouble.

In fact we often had quite a jokey relationship, with Jack pretending to be naughty and me pretending to be cross and us both finding it funny.

It was when he heard me say calmly "We'll talk about this at bedtime" that he had to worry. That meant coming downstairs in pyjamas and bare feet and praying that the hairbrush wasn't out of its drawer.
