To me everything about spanking is a personal decision for parents, so I never gave tips or advice. It's probably a minor distinction, but instead, when discussing spanking with other parents it was more a sharing of experiences. Even then, I only shared with a small circle of other moms (mostly extended family, and one personal friend) with who I had a lot of trust.

The one thing that actually led to a change though was with my close friend/neighbor when she learned my husband and I had started using a small paddle. Our oldest was nine, and a couple good spankings with the hand didn't seem effective as they had been when she was younger. I told my friend after the second use of the paddle that I thought it was working wonders to make spanking effective again. She politely said she didn't believe in using a wood object to spank, but she was curious to see the paddle. My husband made our paddle in the garage from a small piece of wood, and my neighbor remarked that it wasn't particularly big or scary to look at. She asked a few questions and I assured her it didn't make a bare bottom any more red than a hand spanking, but it unquestionably provided a more smarting, stinging smack.

About a month or two later my friend told me that she and her husband had followed up with a small paddle of their own.
