Most of my hairbrush experience was on the receiving end. Momma had a big oval shaped wooden brush with a flat back and it made an excellent paddle for bare little bottoms. One of my friend's Momma spanked me with a flat plastic brush once. It stung pretty good too, but not as bad as Momma's.

On the giving side, I've only used my hairbrush twice, on my oldest and on my daughter. It's a heavy rectangular wooden brush. Judging from their reactions, it's pretty effective.
