I may be the mother Amanda J. is remembering, because I had "That didn't hurt!" from Jack once. The fact that he was crying and rubbing his bottom while he said it suggested that it did hurt, but he went straight back over my knee and I spanked the anger and defiance out of him.

Not long after that I changed to spanking with the back of the hairbrush rather than my hand. You don't hear "That didn't hurt" after a bare-bottom hairbrush spanking.
