I feel again that I'm being a contrarian here, but while I didn't use "time outs" or grounding much, when I did, it was backed by spanking. In other words, if there was more sass or "breaking time" set for the time out, then a spanking seemed clearly needed, and happened. I even used time outs effectively (though just a few times) when they were older (between age nine and twelve), during their "paddle years." Sometimes if that happened, I would escort them to the corner where time outs happened, but did so carrying the paddle in full view. Our girls generally got the message and abided by time outs without problem if the paddle was so visible.

Again contrarian, but I tried to find ways to avoid using spanking if possible, but was not opposed to it if clearly needed.
