I can think of a couple of examples. When he was 9 or so my son Jack went through a spell of not giving me his trunks to wash after swimming lessons but leaving them in his school bag all week. Yuk! A couple of age-appropriate hairbrush spankings cured him of this, and I think they were one of the reasons he was good about giving me his dirty rugby kit to wash as a teenager.

The second example was the dreaded bathroom issues - in particular not flushing - and a bedroom issue: leaving his dirty underpants under the bed for me to pick up. I was not having my lovely little boy growing up it was OK to treat women like that. So, when he got to 10, I had him down at bedtime in pyjamas and bare feet for a lecture. I told him from now on if he left his dirty pants on the floor for me he would be spanked. No warnings. No second chances. Oh the squirming and unconscious bottom-grabbing as I said that!

This proved a harder nut to crack, but a series of bare bottom hairbrush spankings of increasing thoroughness eventually got the message through and he stopped doing it. I also spanked more often for not flushing and that worked too.

A lot of spanking is about guarding the boundaries - yes, you will be spanked if you are naughty about bedtime; yes, you will be spanked if you come in late from playing in the evening - but you accept that rules like that are bound to be broken from time to time. And, though Jack was a good boy, there were times when they just deserve a sore bottom.
