All the parents I know, do not spank or otherwise punish if the child is doing the best he or she can but still gets less than desired grades.

What they WILL light a butt up for however, is a lack of EFFORT.

I have a brother one year older than me; I'm the "baby" of the family. He's VERY smart...but also VERY lazy. Around 6th grade when he would have been about 11 or 12, he started getting really poor grades. Our parents met with his teacher, she told them that he was SO lazy, that if - for example - she handed out an exam with 10 question, each worth 10 points and a 70, or 7 correct answers were needed to pass, he would answer the first seven and not bother with the other 3 if he felt confident the 7 he did answer, were correct.

Our parents considered rewarding him for getting good grades, like paying him for good grades. The other three of us - my 2 sisters and me - protested, saying we all get good grades...FOR FREE! It wasn't fair that he should get rewarded for what we were doing without being rewarded.

Our parents agreed and then decided to start spanking him for bad grades instead of paying him for good grades. I remember our dad telling him, "If God had not blessed you with a brilliant mind and this was all you were capable of, I'd never blame you, never say a word to you...but it's almost sinful to be as smart as you are and just choose not use it."

He did pull up his grades and by the next year, he was pretty much back to making decent grades, though still not up to his potential...but enough to end the spankings.
