From knowing and discussing the subject with a few other moms (friends or extended family) who believe in spanking, it's alwaays been interesting to me how many "old-fashioned" practices are still used. According to those other moms, over the knee is probably by far the most common way spankings are given. My husband and I were both raised with good, old-fashioned over the knee spankings. We also raised two girls, and over the knees wasn't just the only way we did it, but we agreed it was simply the natural way to give a spanking. Spanking itself may be in slow decline (though sometimes I even doubt that), but when and where it is still practiced, I bet it's the default way most parents give a spanking.
