Hairbrushes are attention grabbers when applied to a bare bottom, so can understand you not giving so many spanks with them as with your hand.

I don't suppose your freshly minted 8yo son was too impressed with the upgrade from spoon to brush when bent over Mom's knee for a good spanking.
