My favorite example of this was the spanking I gave my then 13 and 15 year old nephews. The 13 year old was visiting from Canada for a couple weeks during the summer. My husband and I, along with my brother in law, were watching a group of my nephews and nieces in a large beach house my family owns in New Jersey.

5 of the kids (age 10-17) left the beach early one day with our permission claiming they were going home, including my 10 year old son. They didn't go home. They went into town and were caught stealing from a grocery store. Now, if I had my way, I would have seen that each child were spanked there in the store as well as at home. However, our society looks down on public spanking, even for behavior so obviously deserving of it, so after conferring with the other parents we decided the best response was to enforce a punishment of massive potent effectiveness both as a deterrent to the other children and as a sufficient consequence for the children who were guilty of deceit and thievery.

Indeed you could see the 5 guilty children go weak in the knees and/or begin to blush when they were informed that they were going to be spanked in front of the 4 other kids in the basement. The intensity in the room was then maximized when it was specified that, like always, pants would be coming off for each kid including my 15 and 17 year old nephews Adam and Mark. However, the kids had seen each other in their scanty swimwear the last few days so we felt this to be not the blow to the ego it might have been in a different context. I made it known that if I had my way, each child would be spanked bare bottom in front of the whole family regardless of age or gender. This was the type of thing we talked about after the public (semi-public?) spanking was announced: the 'how' of it all. After conferring with each other and making a few phone calls to the parents of the children who would be allowed to watch, to see what they would be comfortable with their kids being allowed to see as witnesses of the punishment, we gathered the children and handed down the official "sentencing".

It was announced that while the oldest 2 would be allowed to keep their shorts on while getting the belt, my 10 year old son Alex, 11 year old niece Rebecca, and 13 year old nephew Matthew were going to lose everything below their midsection and endure a traditional over the knee hand spanking in front of the family. This might sound light given the older kids were going to get the belt, but I come from a family that believes that embarrassment is the most important factor in a truly effective spanking. It simply lasts way longer than the pain, and I find it to be a more effective deterrent. There is also the act of going over the knee itself, which tween kids tend to find very embarrassing itself, and something most 13 year old boys would find particularly shameful. I promise if you had seen the reaction of the 3 younger children, you would understand. These kids have been raised with a strong sense of modesty, but they ought to have known full well we could revoke that if we all agreed the punishment fit the crime. My boy and niece both started crying in horror right there on the spot while my nephew, I don't have a better term for it: he begged us for mercy. My son knew it was completely pointless and just stood there tears flowing. Rebecca made her terror known just by the look on her face but he made it very clear his mind was made up and any protest would only lengthen the spanking. That's when the dam burst in full and she sat down crying and ashamed.

The way I know this punishment was the most effective for Matthew in that moment was how vehemently he protested, get this, not being spanked with the belt over his boxer shorts like the big kids. He protested that he was 13 years old and should be spanked like the big kids because there were other kids watching, and he said it's illegal to spank a child over 13 years old. You know I looked it up, it's true: where he's from! In Canada I guess the law is age 2-12, before/after that is illegal. We calmly informed him that in the United States it is fully legal for him to be spanked as punishment at home for robbing a store, regardless of his age, with the full legal authority in loco parentis to spank his bare bottom, regardless of who is watching. He was also appalled that he was evidently going to be spanked by me, which mortified him as much as any 13 year old would be when learning he's going to get a bare bottom spanking from his aunt in front of his cousins, both same and opposite sex.

I then dealt a massive blow to this boy's dignity and took the liberty of explaining more about the impending spankings. I told him and everyone in the family there that in the case of my two older nephews, for personal reasons involving their parents and the parents of my 12 year-old niece Alexis who would be witnessing the punishment, spankings in front of the family ought to be enforced with them keeping their shorts on. To be blunt, they were uncomfortable for their girl to see her 17 year old cousin bare bottomed and there was an element (which I was in the minority on when making the final decision) that the oldest boys were simply 'too old' for that type of punishment.

What ended up being the tragedy for Adam, the 15 year old boy, was that he was deemed not too old to be spanked in front of Alexis, who was his little sister, nor too old to be spanked by me, his aunt, but he was deemed too old to be spanked in front of any cousins who were not also boys, which unfortunately applied to my 14 year old daughter who witnessed this whole thing take place. I didn't care if she saw him without underpants on, but Adam's parents told me it was indecent. Why it wasn't indecent for his sister to see him spanked bare bottom, I have no idea, but I digress... only to describe some of the basic but strange viewpoints on spanking in my family.

The point is, Alexis' parents had told me they were fine with her witnessing Matthew get a bare bottom spanking, and I had no problem with my daughter seeing him exposed from the waist down... and not that I would have used it even if I was allowed to, his mother had asked that I only spank him by hand. When I called her and told her what he had participated in, she doubled down that he was to be spanked by hand, but agreed with me that the punishment ought to be enforced with significant embarrassment and gave me the authority in that moment to spank his bare bottom, with expectation of privacy revoked.

So there you have it, we technically had the choice of hand spanking him over his shorts or on his bare bottom. Since he had decided to rob a grocery store and physically he still was much more a tween boy than an actual teenage boy, the decision was the spanking would take place on his bare bottom to increase embarrassment. I looked my nephew in his horrified eyes and took the opportunity to paraphrase one of my favorite verses from the book of Isaiah, it's chapter 47 verse 3.

"Your nakedness will be uncovered, and your shame will be exposed. I will take vengeance."

It was at this point he faced the ground in humiliation and appeared to accept his fate. He was the only one who couldn't see it, but his white face upon learning he was getting a public spanking had slowly but surely turned beet red as it became clear that he was not the big kid he thought he was and was going to receive perhaps the most classic and well known childish punishment known to man, at age 13, by his aunt's open hand, in front of a 12 and 14 year old girl. To his credit, he did not start crying on the spot like my boy and Rebecca did, although it was pretty close. I asked him if he had underwear on under his pajama pants, and he squeaked out a yes, and I then gave the order for him to take them off, sit on the couch and stay there. He obeyed, avoiding eye contact with anyone. Multiple eyes silently fixed on his now bare legs and I think he could probably feel everyone's gaze in that moment.

I know some families like to spank simultaneously, but remember embarrassment plays a strong theme if having it as part of the punishment truly fits the crime. You want all eyes on the child being spanked for maximum effectiveness. My son went first and his daddy handled that spanking. The punishment was enforced one by one in front of the other 4 cousins (12+14 year old girls, 12+16 year old boys) as follows:

Alex (10) - OTK bare bottom hand spanking by my husband, he did it fast and delivered a good 40+ smacks that produced a kicking, crying, very sorry boy. Sent bare bottomed to the corner.

Rebecca (11) - OTK bare bottom hand spanking by her father, 40 maybe 50 smacks, and he made her put on a shirt that didn't come down below her waist which showed me he understood the assignment here. I was surprised but very supportive that he was so open to enforcing this punishment at her age, and he did so with power but rather slowly, which I've found to be more effective. I do believe in equality and the punishment was something she clearly found very shameful as the only girl. I'm sure her 12 year old cousin Tristan watching her spanking was very much on her mind the whole time. Her father even sent her bare bottomed to the corner after the spanking, for added embarrassment and I think to make my 10 year old feel less alone. I hadn't seen anyone else in the family do that in a long time. When she started to protest this, he simply told her nobody forced her to steal anything from a store. There was no argument further than that.

Matthew (13) - OTK bare bottom hand spanking by me; I'm not going to lie: I took my time and extended this one. You could see on his red little face with the pursed lips that he desperately didn't want to cry, perhaps thinking there was any possibility my hand wouldn't bring about the water works after the unbearable embarrassment he must have felt taking off his underwear in front of all his cousins. He cried and kicked, he howled, he even roared toward the end, but once he started crying I didn't stop for a while. I wasn't counting but I believe it was around 60 hand smacks from me before I let him up. I'm conflicted in retrospect on whether I regret this, but I didn't send him to the corner and let him put his shorts, but not his pajama pants on.

Adam, part 1 (15) - Belted over his boxer shorts by me 2 dozen times, screaming in falsetto toward the end. He was not prepared for the final part of his punishment.

Mark (17) - The oldest and therefore most responsible was very lucky to keep his boxers on despite the girls watching, but to make up for it he was belted by my husband somewhere between 40-50 times. It stopped when he collapsed and literally couldn't stand anymore from the pain.

Adam, part 2 (15) - Finally, I took Adam and his 12 year old sister Alexis into a bedroom and ordered him to take his underpants down and off. Out of pure fear, he agreed and I ordered him to use his two hands to lift his shirt up. He shut his eyes tight, probably doing his best to pretend his sister wasn't there, and obeyed. I don't know how he managed to stay standing, but I belted his bare bottom a dozen more times.

Given how painful it was for Adam and Mark to receive the belt, I wonder if Matthew perhaps considers himself lucky in retrospect. He ought to, but no 13 year old boy wants to endure what he did. However, he stole from a store and was caught. The embarrassment as part of his punishment was warranted, and I got his mother to sign off on that.

Thus concludes the family spanking of 5 thieves. I hope you enjoyed, and although we might have different philosophies and traditions I'd like to hear honest input from other moms on how we handled this. Admittedly, there are things I personally would have done differently but you have to respect the wishes of each parent of each child involved in this. There was a lesson to be learned here as well as demonstrated, and I don't think anyone can deny we accomplished that.
