We added the paddle when our oldest was nine, and several good hand spankings (bare and over the knee just as she had when she was younger) didn't seem effective. After my husband suggested it (and I agreed) he made a small wood paddle in the garage.

A few years later we added the paddle for our youngest, also when she turned nine. It didn't require much other change at all to the way we spanked, but the paddle truly got their attention and provided a good, memorable sting. In my opinion, the little paddle worked wonders for both of them from age nine until they turned thirteen, at which time my husband and I agreed spanking should end.

I don't see a hairbrush as anything but a kind of paddle.
