Every child is different, but with my son an effective spanking was one that produced crying without a hint of anger or defiance in it. When they are over your lap you can feel how they are reacting to the spanking, and Jack could by crying hard but still fighting every spank. I did not want him coming off my lap thinking he had won even a little bit, so the spanking carried on in those cases.

Jack was not one for crocodile tears, but sometimes I got over-loud crying - a sort of "You want crying? I'll give you crying" attitude that showed me he had not learnt his lesson yet, so again the spanking went on.

An effective spanking was followed by a vigorous dance and a complete lack of modesty as both hands were busy behind rubbing and grabbing and squeezing. That was followed by a long cry and cuddle with Mum, and I think it was the combination of the spanking and the cuddle that worked the magic so that I had a happy and well behaved boy the next day.
