I remember one time in a big supermarket/mall with underground parking garage, late afternoon after a lot of people have been through, I had the children with me during a shopping run and noticed their soles getting quite black as they walked ahead ... which made me smile but I didn't tell them anything. Then my youngest son reminded my daughter she had black feet, to which she just replied "look at yours" and that led to the three comparing their feet, all looked decently clean from top but with nicely black soles contrasting ... It seems like more dirt accumulates in busy indoors places than outside where it's frequently washed away.
They scrub their feet as they come home (or I did it when they were younger) to clean what can be cleaned off, a bit of a trace always remains but that's not a problem because they don't get dirt on the couch or their bed.
