The ground in the city is mostly flat and unremarkable but can have bad surprises in the form of tiny shards of glass, so yes a lot of awareness is required and that is also trained as you walk barefoot. When going to town with my own children and also exploring other cities I found it doesn't only teach them to be more aware but also enormously boosts their self-confidence, especially if they master something that others don't seem to dare ... Though they like it even better if they are not alone in going barefoot somewhere, if they spot other barefoot kids (which sometimes happens in summer) they are quite excited and it can result in instant friendships ... at a young age friendships are formed so easily!
