Hi, Sally! I knew before my girl was born that it's healthy to let them grow up barefoot and part of a wonderful childhood with plenty of sensual experiences. So I didn't put anything on her feet as a baby and she made it clear from the beginning she didn't want anything on her feet, often using them as another pair of hands. When she learned to walk I noticed how she uses her toes as fingers to grip the ground and steady herself. I then got the idea of going out barefoot with her as it was spring, I walked barefoot myself to feel the same and I watched out that she doesn't get hurt. Her feet were baby-soft at the time but she managed to walk on all surfaces with no difficulty. I took her everywhere she liked and watched with fascination as her entire soles got black in town.
A few months later they got tougher, still smooth, and now she's in the process of forming arches as I can already see after a walk in town, now the blackened balls and heels are more clearly separated from each other. Like your kids, no cracks, all perfectly smooth, a child's skin is so wonderfully adaptable.
Recently as we went shopping for clothes she told me she wants to go barefoot all winter. Now we can get some frost and snow and I'm well aware of the risk of frostbite at freezing temperatures so we'll be very cautious about that. But it makes me smile she knows what's good for her!
