This is reflected in period portraits by classic artists - shoes were expensive and uncomfortable in days without A/C. Lots of children attended church and school in fairly fine clothes but without shoes. This changed around 1960, and people got it in their mind that bare feet were disgusting, dirty and gross.

If new trends are anything to go by, most people think kids and their bare feet are pretty cute, though I have encountered a certain subgroup that despises both with a passion. These are usually 30-ish middle aged single women, who for some inexplicable reason adore cats. I think it’s some sort of psychological replacement phenomenon. I think they are Karens.
