I guess in that case they wouldn't feel good exposing their feet. Did they dare to go barefoot in the end?
Starting with clean feet, they don't smell, and don't start smelling as they go bare ... even if it's hot (they sweat but that evaporates before it can smell bad).
Once they realize that, I'm sure they won't be as embarrassed of their feet any more.
