Hi! Their soles aren't even particularly hard, just tough and leathery where they touch the ground. Their pads act as natural thermal insulation.
I warned them of the risk of burn or frostbite and of course they all prefer mild temperatures. Even on hot days they insist on going barefoot, just avoiding hot tar in full sunlight.
Sometimes we got warnings about broken glass in supermarkets but fortunately none of the kids were thrown out, they also didn't get injured.
In terms of sports they love swimming in summer, cycling (we mounted barefoot-friendly pedals), slackline and skateboarding. Of course that requires particular attention, our boy says he has much more feeling with bare feet.
When it's really cold they wear soft minimal shoes outside.
