Last weekend we did another hike together, 15 km mostly on grass with some forested sections and relatively few gravel trails. The whole family was barefoot, all six of us! We took shoes along for my wife and me (which was actually unnecessary), of course not for our children who wouldn't put them on anyway. (As a side note, driving our car is something I always do barefoot now.)
And it was not just us, we saw two couples hiking barefoot (carrying their shoes), three kids at a playground (no shoes in sight) and a couple more who probably just took off their shoes after the hike (it was a hot day).
It's wonderful to share the barefoot hiking experience with our kids, though my son stepped in a thistle and it took a bit of effort to get the pricks out of the skin. (He's fine now!)
So when we return there we won't bother with shoes, at least as long as it's not that cold.
Summer won't end, it seems when looking at the weather ... so for all our kids it's still shorts and bare feet weather, to school and everywhere (or for the younger girl a short dress which she prefers when it's warm).
