I think it's a lot about attitude.
Some parents don't trust their children to do their own thing right. They want them to obey, to grow up in a certain way, to become exactly what the parents imagine them to be. Which means that while trying to conform the children don't get a chance to unfold their own potential.

"Don't worry, just let them do their thing" would be a great approach, together with a little encouragement here and there. I'm doing this because it's fun, nobody told me to do it, some make remarks but they don't matter, I'm doing something good for myself and not harming anybody else.

I like how some parents writing here actually encourage their children to do more barefoot activities. Mine are more like "let him do whatever is fun for him" which is allright, so I learned by experiencing it myself where I like to go barefoot and in which weather.
