Yes, it's essential to educate them about the risks and advantages early on, and let them choose.
Given the choice, children will typically prefer freedom of the toes.
Our parenting approach is to give a choice whenever possible, so they learn to make good decisions.
Some parents demand obedience, some use emotional tactics to influence their children, but I think it's best to regard them as persons capable of their own decisions and they should also have a chance to decide "wrong" and see the consequences, that can be a much better learning experience than being told everything by the parents.
Of course we give advice and try to be good examples. When they ask and it's about barefooting I will never say "no", just sometimes "be extra careful".
Yes you can reason and discuss with young kids, you just have to do it at a level that they understand at their stage of development and experience.
With this approach ... they're all quite witty and reasonable, for their age or just in general.
