Hi Carol and everybody
Running cross country barefoot on a variety of surfaces is probably the best and healthiest thing for strong and healthy feet. My children also don't care much for the paved trails when they're barefoot outside, they love to take shortcuts. After all grass is more appealing and pleasant to walk on than paved or even gravel roads. That's perfectly fine as long as it doesn't go across somebody's private garden ...
We avoid the footwear chaos by having shelves under the coat hooks in the vestibule and a clear rule that beyond that point everybody has clean bare feet. With parquet flooring, carpets and floor heating it's certainly the most pleasant thing for all.
For our kids it's only a matter during frosty winter days like now; unlike in previous years they don't even have winter shoes but go with a variety of sock-shoes or socks that they take off at the first opportunity and will be glad to get rid of once it warms up a bit.
I'd recommend to ask everybody to leave their footwear by the door (and have a place for it so people don't fall over discarded shoes and socks as they come in), it helps keep the house tidy.
All the best from our family of six, looking forward to warming weather next week!
