It should never be a punishment or a reward for anything. Though I understand walking barefoot can feel punishing or rewarding depending on the surface ...

If any of my children do something wrong, what they have to do is to make up for it. But fortunately they don't have a lot of "criminal energy" ... they have a good understanding for what's really important.
