They have been barefoot in conditions where it would be too cold for most, including me, and didn't get stiff or numb toes. All three know about the risk of frostbite and the warning signs of losing the feeling in the toes or the cold biting really painfully ... And their feet hold up remarkably well on the hot road in summer too.

I assume they will prefer jobs that don't have a shoe requirement later on. They now walk barefoot into every place with cheerful innocence and almost never get into trouble for it, and they are extra excited when I join them walking barefoot but I only do that where I find it pleasant, not in the coldness and when I go to town in summer I wear minimal sandals to insulate from the hot ground.
