Hi and welcome!
I'm 17 too, it was a couple of years ago that I was on a beach holiday with the family and I also noticed that with sand getting everywhere, it's unpleasand to wear anything on the feet so soon I stopped putting on my sandals. I guess once your son comes to the conclusion he can easily go barefoot all day, he doesn't even need to put on flipflops to go out.

I prefer bare feet all summer, it's so liberating!
