You are right, it is important they find out by themselves where they can or can't go barefoot. They can only do that if they are allowed to try and nobody tells them they can't do that.

I never push them in any way, I just don't suggest they put on shoes at any point - and if they do something noteworthy such as a hike, sports ... I tell them if I'm impressed.

My daughter likes occasional foot massages. Those are a special parent/child moment! (After a bath or shower. During a day in town her soles are black and there's nothing wrong with that.)
