I'm reminded of this article from a south african organization running a number of schools:

I'm sure parents and children alike, and anyone who tried walking barefoot, can agree.

So I wonder why it's not more widespread, looking at it logically, there are some risks but those who have concerns should just look at the places where daily barefooting is practiced without problems. Also walking barefoot from the beginning teaches you to take good care of your environment and keep it a pleasant place.
