well Quack...the answer lies somewhere inbetween...just listen to the post game interviews on the radio and notice the difference in TONE and stuff like "THEY executed OUR gameplan" vs. "They FORGOT how to rebound..close out..THEY need to work on transition etc...." My take on the situation, and I have been consistent, is that Coach Lanier might not be getting the kind of help from the assistants that this group needs to be more successful. Its too bad because ON PAPER they seem to have reasonable credentials...yet enough people find things that aren't working ...things that a cohesive staff MIGHT notice. It's not like we are facing teams with superior players/atheletes on a game to game basis. Sure losses will happen...I just think on a given night they can find at least 5 kids who want to go balls out..and ride them to victory. Maybe I am oversimplifying it...you guys will surely let me know....As for the booing..I sure felt like it..Yeah- I left early..down 16 with 3 minutes to go ...I wanted to hear the post game interview more than I wanted to watch the samuri come down. Kudo's for the 3 minute fire drill that cut into the lead a little...but I think both Rider and Marist coaches knew how to end the deal with big leads and little time left. I am not new to college basketball. I concede- a miracle could have happened????
Actually I want to see Coach Lanier succeed for many reasons. He seems to have numerous admirable personal qualities...in a profession full of scumbags..and users..."Coach/Teacher" my ass...not a lot of them.....we don't have to look very far to see how he stands out from the crowd on that issue! Perhaps thats his appeal as a recruiter...My view of my assistants was to help me in areas that I was either weak/had little experience..and I HAD to rely on them until I got better..and sometimes got help from fellow coaches if I thought I needed more help. Win/lose I had to take the heat. I feel for his frustration..I hope I never have to look at a picture like the TU ran the other day again. I try to remember that this is Siena..and he is not going to have the resourses he is used to..or the budget...and the institution is unable to support the program like some of the places he's been. I would think that the assistants would be grateful to be at a place like Siena...because they WILL get noticed..and....because we have fans who DO CARE...maybe can't donate like other places..but do show up..hope for a nice evening out..and probably a win (imagine if we showed up EXPECTING to lose )and have to watch some of what we had to watch.
I wasn't at Fairfield..yet the 3 local newspapers spoke of lots of action on the bench as contributing to the emotional win. I didn't see anyone move and even look at prosper when he got (and probably deservedly so) yanked. Like it or not..someone has to counsel him..if the player wants to be a jerk ...thats another matter..the coach is still in control...and the other players know that no matter how much they are struggling (coachspeak for playing lousy)everyone is in it together..and things can get better.
One other thought- We are not recruiting naive kids to come here to play like the "good old days". These players had PLENTY of choices, have been in and around the AAU circuit..all know other D1 players at other colleges, know the drill...and are not victims in any sense of the word. Just look at the transfer percentages and these kids are very astute as to what their options are. It is to the eternal credit to any college coach that can keep a group together...and that sometimes means going through streches like Siena is experiencing right now.
I know I didn't solve any problems..maybe the "work in progress" is just ganna take a little longer than I thought it would...or would like it to. I have no plans to scrap my season tickets!
