Further musings. . . . .

So the slot-less cache card is quite distinct from the PDS-slot ones Micromac sold for Quadras.

Effectively, it's a rare DiiMo 68040 card, designed to fit in an 040 socket (unlike current 030 DiiMos), but supplied without a CPU, so the original is just relocated.

Scott says that clock-speed shouldn't be a problem:
"Note: The L2 cache that came on these adapter cards has the capablity of
running at 175mhz, so no matter what chip you ultimately decide to install,
do not worry about the speed of the L2 cache---it will always work fine."

The problem is that they're as rare as hen's teeth. The only reference Google can find is:
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-mac68k/1998/12/01/0005.html.

So, we've found what model of slot-less cache fits, only to find that we are going to have to search high-and-low to find actual boards. And looking at the complexity of that board, I don't fancy a clone project! ;-)

Stuart
