Here is what I asked and got back:

I just don't know what you and the FAQ mean by "change two values in the Boot and GUSD resources" is this the in the system file or is there more than 1 file involved?
Can you explain Boot and GUSD resources?
I boot from a 8.0 tools disk (floppy) and I can see the 8.0 CD, I will install 8.0 and then do the upgrade to 8.1. I will then open the system file (a copy) in the system folder do the mods with Resedit that I have on an ext HDD then save it back to the system folder (right?). Probably zapping the PRAM and a reboot should work. If I understood your process this should do the trick.
I just need help with the Boot and GUSD resource.

S.Sturgis sent me the info I needed to know:

Boot from another source (my 8.0 tools disk in this case) and make a copy of the System Suitcase in the virgin 8.1 SF. Open the copy of the System Suitcase in ResEdit (from my external drive).
This will take a few seconds as the System Suitcase is anywhere from 8 to 12 megs and is full of STUFF.

Anyway....Each of those entries inside the System "window" within resedit represent chunks of the Mac OS. Everything from icons, to fonts, to Gestalt IDs are in there.

The GUSD (changes to 99 and boot process to 10) resouce is one of the two that have to be altered. You have to hack the System Suitcase into believing it is still encased in a real 575 and that it's okay to run at the CC's native screen resolution.

Upon making those changes, there will be a long 5-10 delay after the chime of startup and then the video should come on.

I never know what the gusd resources was, now I know where to fish. I will let you guys know if I get a catch.
