Subject: Taco progress - but don't get excited!

As I only pick up my CC shell and the LCD parts in the States later this month, I can't do much in that direction atm.

However, I've just spent a successful hour putting together a 'bare bones' Gossamer system to check that all is well. And it is! :-) A G3 board (with 233Mhz CPU, ROM and PSU board) kindly offered to me at a very low price by John Allen was combined with three 64Mb DIMMs (very cheap on eBay), a microATX PSU - again much cheaper than Apple PSUs, but don't forget to move the jumper on the l/b - and a floppy drive from a 475 with an 8.5 Disc Tools floppy inserted, driving a 12" Apple mono-monitor to produce a minimalist G3 system.

The good news is that it all works. The knowledge gained confirms that:

1) a microATX PSU really is plug-and-play, with working power-up from the keyboard. as long as you move the l/b jumper and remember not to overload its 140W capacity.

2) there is no sound, not even on the speaker o/p, unless a 'personality board' of some sort is installed.

3) The G3 heatsink gets pretty warm, even when it's only idling.

Having said all that, please don't expect any further progress for a month!

Stuart
